Guest Post - Trinity Yoga

My name is Tiesha and I am a 35 year old, mother of 1. My healthy lifestyle journey started 14 years ago, when my daughter was born. 9 days after her birth, I was taken to the hospital secondary to having a heart attack and postpartum cardiomyopathy and hypertension. Here I am, lying in a hospital room, worried that I won’t live to see my baby girl grow up. I was so afraid and so young. I thought “ho could this happen to me”.

After I was discharged home, I changed my diet completely.....COLD TURKEY. Fear and motherhood will do that to you. I was a novice and had no idea what I was doing so I started with just the basics, such as low salt, low fat, low cholesterol and low carbs. I exercised for 30 minutes four days a week, just doing basic cardio, such as walking....as I was still recuperating until my heart healed. I was a nursing student at the time, so I knew how to read food labels.

As the years went by, I fell off and went back and fourth with consuming healthy foods and working out. For many years, I would eat well and workout during the winter and in the summer, I just got lazy.....until I had another health scare with my heart and blood pressure.

Fast forward to today, and this is the most disciplined that I have ever been. It took me 12-13 years to finally figure out what works best for me and that is just.....stop taking things so seriously. I want to be healthy and so I do the work but I also indulge without overdoing it. I’m a lover of food and I refuse to deprive myself of that. I feel great and mentally, I have lifted so much pressure off of myself, which allows me to be successful on this journey.

I think it’s important to note that it doesn’t happen overnight. In my case, it took years of trial and error and although, there were ups and downs....I have to give myself credit for being motivated to want more for myself and as a result, each year, I gained more knowledge about how to eat healthy and what workouts best benefited my body type. Don’t give up ladies! Every day is a challenge. Each day, I speak a Mantra or Prayer to myself, to remind me to stay disciplined and motivated to choose healthy options, to workout and to keep calm in the midst of chaos. God Bless you on your journey!

July Wellness Challenge

I decided my first post on my new blog would be my plans to prep for an upcoming wellness challenge. My fit friends and I have decided to kick things up a notch for July. We all are on different yet similar journeys and support each other as much as possible. We're like quite a few of you all. We need something to keep us motivated and on track so what better way than a challenge?!

To prepare for a successful month, I have decided to work with my old Coach again. When she trained me in person and online, I was at my fittest. I need her to get me back on my grind! I don't have any problems working out, my challenges really come with eating right. Planning meals, calculating calories and macros (argh!!). With a Coach*, she takes the guess work out of all of that.

Here are my plans for July:
  • Drink a gallon of water daily
  • Eat plant based** whole foods
  • Take vitamins daily
  • Workout 5-6 days/week
  • Meditate daily
  • STRETCH!!! I seem to skip this important step
  • Move more during the day (I have a sedentary job)
  • Blog my progress weekly
  • Track my food
  • Meal plan weekly
  • Make healthier choices when eating out

Feel free to follow me on Instagram (powerofwellness) where I track my workouts. Mostly selfies with occasional videos :)

Next week - I will post my before photos and stats so stay tuned. If you are on your own journey, please share what you are doing as well.

*Check out Coach D on Instagram.  In addition to being a personal trainer, online coach and sports nutritionist, she is also a mother of 3 who happens to be prepping for her first show!  Can she get anymore badass?!

**Plant Based Diet - includes not only fruits and vegetables, but also nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans. It doesn’t mean that you are vegetarian or vegan and never eat meat or dairy. Rather, you are proportionately choosing more of your foods from plant sources.

Welcome

I created this blog as my online journal to document my journey to wellness. When I speak of wellness, I am speaking on being mentally and physically well.

I started a Instagram page early 2018 to document my journey. There is only so much you can share through pictures. Sometimes, I want to give a back story or go into more detail but the longer the caption the less likely it will be read. Even if no one ever reads this blog, it will help me stay accountable.

Hopefully, this blog will also inspire you to get on your own wellness journey.
